United Way of LaPorte County Board

 
An 17-member volunteer Board of Directors exercises total decision making and policy setting authority over the United Way of LaPorte County. These volunteers come from all walks of life throughout LaPorte County and are accountable to the people of this community. When people or firms contribute to the United Way campaign, their funds come under the stewardship of these volunteers who work diligently to keep necessary costs to a minimum. Amar Agrawal is a partly retired physician. He graduated from medical school in Bombay in 1969, and was awarded a gold medal for his achievements. He came to the U.S.A. in 1970, and after completing further training, started practice in Michigan City in 1975 until January 2010. He is board certified in Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology. He is on staff at St. Anthony hospital and Laporte hospital and has also served on various committees at the hospitals.

He served as volunteer physician at Open Door clinic (charitable medical facility) in Michigan City for more than ten years until it was dissolved. He served as president of Indian Medical Association of Northwest Indiana (I.M.A.)in 1994 and also served as president of Indian American Cultural Center in years 2006 and 2007. He was awarded lifetime achievement award by I.M.A. in 2010. He is currently also serving as a board member of Laporte County Health Department. 

He was an architect in starting “India-Fest,” an event organized by the Indian community every year, where we come to meet our American friends on a more personal basis, showing our culture, dances, dress, food etc. Since being partly retired, he is devoting more time now to family and volunteer work. He sincerely believes in promoting good will and better understanding between different ethnic groups and cultures and promoting charitable work. He is married and has two children and four grandchildren.
