President, Franciscan St. Anthony Health – Michigan City
Franciscan St. Anthony Health – Michigan City (SAH-MC) is a part of Franciscan Alliance, Inc. James Callaghan, MD MBA, has served as President of Franciscan St. Anthony Health – Michigan City, since February 1, 2008. In this role, Dr. Callaghan has led SAH-MC's initiatives that have resulted in SAH-MC earning national and local recognition for outstanding quality of care. Previous to this, he served as Chief Operations Officer and Vice President Medical Affairs at SAH-MC, where he led the physician community into a clinically integrated relationship with SAH-MC, and led in a financial turn around of SAH-MC.
Dr. Callaghan began his local medical career as a family physician in Michigan City and Chesterton. Prior to this he served as a flight surgeon in the U.S. Air Force, leading international medical team operations involving humanitarian assistance, as well as serving with the U.S. Air Force "Thunderbirds" Air Demonstration Team. Dr. Callaghan is a graduate of the University of Notre Dame, University of Illinois College of Medicine (Chicago) and completed his residency in family medicine at Northwestern University and St. Francis Hospital and Health Centers. He received his MBA from Purdue University.
Active in the community, Dr. Callaghan is a board member of the Northern Indiana Education Foundation, United Way of Laporte County, and the University of Notre Dame Alumni Club of LaPorte County. He has also coached multiple Michigan City Soccer Club youth league teams and served on the board of the Michigan City Piranhas youth league swim team, as well as on the U.S. Senator Richard Lugar U.S. Air Force Academy Merit Selection Board.
Dr. Callaghan currently resides in Long Beach with his wife, Sue, and four children.
