"Elvis is in the Building!"

A Night in Old Las Vegas was held at the Blue Chip Casino in Michigan City on November 11, 2011, where Elvis was the main attraction. The Rat Pack's charming Sammy Davis Jr. and Dean Martin were also in attendance, and you may have even spotted Marilyn Monroe. The night was full of everything that Old Las Vegas had to offer.

Mentoring effort benefits from United Way

The United Way of La Porte County's contribution to mentoring in La Porte County is not limited to Hours for Ours, which pairs students and mentors at most Michigan City schools.

The Youth Service Bureau is another recipient of yearly support from United Way, which helps fund programs such as Teen Court, Kids on the Block, summer programs and Big Brothers Big Sisters.

Stepping Stone Shelter for Women Inc.'s transitional housing site, The Bridge, provides all the amenities a family needs to meet its goals.

And the funding Stepping Stone receives from United Way is that "10 percent that really counts," Stepping Stone Executive Director Gerry Jones said.

They built a giant paw from many tiny paws at Elston Middle School.

Club Discovery students worked with an artist who showed them how to put their own stamps on tiny, wet clay paws. Some students added little bits of jewelry while others created designs in the clay itself. Some signed their names.

Men's shelter helps the homeless with United Way funding

A hot shower, clean clothes and a meal are just three things most people can have daily.

But homelessness for men in Michigan City means lacking those simple necessities.

As a temporary solution to the homeless men's plight, the Salvation Army Corps of Michigan City provides a homeless men's shelter to any man in need.
